FAQ: PMDD Nutrition support

Please reach us at info@stepping-stonesnutrition.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe hormonal condition that causes significant mood, physical, and behavioral symptoms in the days before menstruation. While PMDD requires comprehensive medical management, nutrition plays a meaningful supporting role — certain eating patterns can help stabilize blood sugar, reduce inflammation, support neurotransmitter production, and ease the intensity of symptoms like mood swings, fatigue, and cravings.

A dietitian does not treat PMDD medically, but we can provide meaningful nutritional support as part of a broader care team. We often work alongside gynecologists, psychiatrists, and therapists to address PMDD from multiple angles.  If you don't have a care team yet, we can help connect you with providers.

Nutrition changes for PMDD are most effective when practiced consistently throughout the entire cycle, not just in the luteal phase (the two weeks before your period). That said, specific strategies can be especially helpful in the days leading up to your period. We'll work with you to develop a cycle-informed nutrition approach that fits your lifestyle.
