Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@stepping-stonesnutrition.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS); UnitedHealthcare (UHC), including Surest, UMR; Aetna, Aetna CVS, and NC State Health Plan. Self-pay options are also available with a 20% discount for paying at the time of service. Coverage for nutrition services varies by plan — we recommend verifying benefits by calling the number on your insurance card. Self-pay options are available as well. Please refer to our guide for calling your insurance company to find out about your nutrition benefits.

Not at all. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from nutrition therapy. If your relationship with food is causing stress, affecting your daily life, or simply doesn't feel right, that's reason enough to reach out.

Yes — therapy and nutrition therapy address different aspects of eating disorder recovery. A therapist addresses the emotional and psychological roots of the disorder, while a dietitian focuses on the nutrition and physical recovery side of eating disorder treatment — rebuilding a healthy relationship with food, restoring nourishment, and addressing meal structure, food fears, and eating behaviors. Both are important, and we collaborate closely with therapists to ensure your care is comprehensive and well-coordinated. For eating disorder recovery, it is essential to have both on your child's care team as it leads to significantly better outcomes.

This varies widely depending on your goals and history. Some clients benefit from just a few focused sessions; others prefer and/or need ongoing support as they build new habits and body trust over time. We'll discuss your goals in your first appointment and give you a realistic sense of what to expect. There's no required commitment — you're in control of your care.

In North Carolina, the title "Registered Dietitian Nutritionist" (RD or RDN) is a protected credential that requires an accredited degree, supervised internship hours, a national board exam, and state licensure. The term "nutritionist" is less regulated and can be used by people with varying levels of training. When you work with Stepping Stones Nutrition, you are working exclusively with licensed, credentialed Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs/LDNs).

Frequently Asked Questions - Family & Child Specific

Please reach us at info@stepping-stonesnutrition.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We work with children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. Whether your child is experiencing growth concerns, picky eating, weight-related worries, or is in eating disorder recovery, our dietitians are experienced in developmentally appropriate nutrition care.

Yes—if you have concerns about your child's eating habits, growth, or relationship with food, nutrition counseling can be a valuable source of support. Whether your child is a picky eater, has a medical condition that affects nutrition, struggles with feeding challenges, or you simply have questions about meeting their nutritional needs, we'll work with you to create practical strategies that fit your family's goals.

We've seen this before. We're experienced in working with reluctant clients in a low-pressure, non-judgmental way. Often, an initial parent consultation can be a helpful first step to discuss goals and concerns before involving your child directly. We're happy to talk through the best approach for your family.

Never. We use a gentle, low-pressure, curiosity-based approach to food exploration. Research consistently shows that pressure and forced exposure make selective eating worse over time. Our goals are to make sure your child is getting adequate nutrition for normal growth and development; to reduce anxiety around food; to build positive associations; and to expand variety at a pace that feels safe and manageable for your child — and for you.
